We want to answer your most pressing questions—or, you know, just the things that you’re
curious about. Please keep them coming to: [email protected]. Below, a q
for our beauty director, Jean Godfrey-June.

Dear Jean, Best recommendation for a clean, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that also detangle?
Brushing my hair is always a challenge, and I’m worried about breakage. Bonus if it’s unisex. —Ellyn B.

Dear Ellyn, Short answer: These two gorgeous minimalist, giant white pump bottles of Grown Alchemist Nourishing
Shampoo and Conditioner leave any hair type—any—shinier, softer, smoother, more manageable, smelling absolutely
fantastic, and, bonus, looking like a million bucks.

How I fell in love with all things Grown Alchemist in the first place is a (slightly) longer story: I stayed at the
magical, minimalist, organic Surfrider Hotel, an old ’50s and ’60s motel across the street from the beach in Malibu.
The wildly attractive Australians who own it transformed it from “old ’50s and ’60s motel”—I know many people love
them, but I loathe the self-consciously cheap and cheerful ironic redesigns of such places—into exactly what you
want when you’re looking for beachy-goopy California-ness. I mean exactly. There is macramé, there is
earthenware, there are beautiful woods and whitewashed walls, there are textures and neutrals, and there is a lofty
airiness to set it all off perfectly. As the sun rises and starts to glint over the Pacific, you curl up with a
blanket on a linen-slipcovered sofa in the rooftop garden, coffee and impossibly delicious breakfast bowl (eggs,
avocados, fermented veg) at your side, and watch the waves roll in. You are in California, and it is glorious.

Step into the bathroom—again coolly minimalist, with patterned tiles, more whitewashed walls, crinkly linen
bathrobes, and beautiful, gigantic pump bottles of shampoo, body cream, conditioner, hand wash, and so on, each one
smelling faintly but distinctively of different blends of gorgeous Australian botanicals—and you will become a
fervent Grown Alchemist devotee forever. (At this stage of the game, all hotels should be using big
dispensers instead of the travel-size samples that clog the earth with plastic.) I’m a beauty editor, and even I had
to sample everything, right then and there, as soon as I arrived in my room. My hair looked and felt and smelled
fantastic, my limbs were soft and supple, and everything was clean and fresh and well moisturized.

I left the Surfrider determined to redesign my house in its image; that has not happened, I’m sorry to report. My
bathroom (as well as my bedroom, and powder room, and guest room), however, is rife with Grown Alchemist—it makes even my
so-heinous-it-might-actually-be-genius powder room, which looks like a Donald Trump tanning booth, with gold accents
and a purple-beige sink, feel somehow breezily luxe and organic. (The goop dry brush and shiso candle help, too. The
decorating capabilities of beauty products are an unheralded resource.)

Tip for LA residents:

Once the world has returned to outdoor dining, make sure to insist on visiting any friends staying at the
Surfrider, and schedule your visit for dinnertime. The healthily delicious, ultranourishing food; incredible
cocktails; and once-in-a-lifetime view (you can’t eat there unless you’re a guest or a friend of a guest) cannot
be missed. But really, just stay there if you can. Or if you already live in a whitewashed, sun-soaked Malibu
beach house, stock up on Grown Alchemist.
